Domaine du Chardonnay – Chablis, 5 October 2017

2017 reveals once again that the weather directly affects the volume and quality of the crop but also the mood….

This year 2017 began with difficulty with spring frosts, as early as April.

Temperatures down to -6 ° were recorded. Mechanisms were put in place to save the buds; candles, sprinkling and increased monitoring of the various plots … The main objective was to minimise damage. The frost mainly impacted some well-localised parcels, but fortunately, part of the vineyard was spared so then was able to spend this period of frost without worry.

Candles on Montée de Tonnerre

The end of spring and early summer of 2017 was a contrast between beautiful sunny and rainy days. These weather conditions allowed for an early and prosperous development of the vine, even if it didn’t replace the lost buds. The vines were beautiful and full.

A flowering that took place on the first fortnight of June, a little earlier than the previous years. The vine took advantage of this favourable weather. This suggested a good harvest…

After flowering, the summer continued in an alternation of brightness and rain with some very hot days in July. Given the heat, the forecast for the start of the harvest was early.

The month of August was decisive, with an uncertain weather. A very rainy start with days of very strong heat, and a rather gloomy end of month. The harvest began on Chablis the 3-4 September. We preferred to wait a few days to start on September 6th in order to get a nice balance of sugar – acidity. The grapes frequently ranged from 12 to 12.5 degrees Celsius, near 13 in certain plots. The harvest took place until 16th September. We have been very surprised of the volumes that we have collected, notably on the Premiers Crus, such as Vaillons and Montée De Tonnerre. Volumes are below average, and will not allow us to catch up with the previous vintage.

With 2017, Chablis holds an excellent, maybe even a great vintage, that some do not hesitate to compare it already to 2014, or even 2010. A vintage that will probably be a very typical Chablis.

If the quality is at the rendezvous in 2017 in Chablis, the worry will be again in the volumes harvested. This brings us back to the consequences of the frost that severely affected the vineyard in the spring, notably our Premiers Crus.

Now make space for the vinification!

Domaine Langoureau – Saint Aubin, 4 October

The harvest went very well. We started on September 2nd and finished on the 8th.

The conditions were ideal. We had 25 mm of water a few days before starting, which unblocked the plant in relation to the water stress of the summer. Temperatures ranged from 15 to 22 degrees. It was perfect!

We had a normal harvest on practically all the cuvées and the quality is magnificent. We are delighted!

Domaine Jean-Marc Lafont – Beaujolais, 4 October

The harvest began on 4th September and ended on 20th September.

This year has been particularly intense by its sunshine, allowing this vintage to be among one of the best of the decade.

We had some plots affected by hail; it did not affect the quality of the grapes that remains exceptional, but only the quantity! In fact, the harvest is about 30% lower.

This vintage has a lot of fruit and concentration and reminiscent of the vintage 2011….
