Château Val Joanis is set in an idyllic place and it’s easy to see why it has become over the years a number one destination for weddings and life events to remember. A bit of history…
Located in the Luberon, in the Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur region, east of Avignon and north of Aix-en-Provence, Val Joanis is on the site of an ancient Roman villa, some of the foundations of which are still visible in the lower part of the property.
When you look at the stunning picture above, it is hard to imagine that not so long ago, château Val Joanis was once in ruins. It wasn’t until 1977 when Jean-Louis Chancel purchased the property, that it saw its renaissance. Between 1979 and 1999, he planted 120 hectares of vines and commissioned the creation of an on-site, modern winery to the architect Jean-Jacques Pichoux.
The beautiful Gardens of Val Joanis…
While this transition was underway, in 1978, Jean-Louis’ wife, Cécile, worked, with the assistance of landcape gardener Tobie Loup de Vian, to create a 17th-century style garden.
The gardens are built on three terraces cut into a hillside overlooking the vineyards.
The upper terrace is a kitchen garden and flower garden. The middle terrace features flowers, particularly roses and the lower terrace features fruit trees, particularly old varieties of apples and pears.
Since 2005, the gardens have been ranked as “Jardin Remarquable” “Outstanding Gardens” by the French Ministry of Culture and in 2008 the French Association of Horticulture and Garden journalists awarded them “Jardin de l’année” “Garden of the Year”.
The owners today..
The Roozen family purchased the estate in 2013, and their investments in restoration and modernisation of the vineyards, gardens and cellar have been substantial. They are continually striving to produce delicious wines, with an outstanding quality and amazing value, whilst protecting the environment.
The fantastic terroir of Val Joanis
Val Joanis produces seven wines under the Côtes du Luberon appellation, using primarily Roussanne & Vermentino for whites, and Grenache & Syrah for reds & rosé.
The vineyards of Val Joanis benefits from high altitude (280 to 450 metres) and sunny exposure. They enjoy a particularly favourable microclimate with late ripening giving the wines freshness and balance.
Val Joanis Range of wines
Les Agasses (means Magpie in old regional French) rosé is made of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache.
A lovely pale rosé, delightfully crisp and fruity with fresh citrus, apricot, watermelon, strawberry and strawberry aromas. Extremely good value, you’ll struggle to find a better rosé for that price. Because of its quality and price ratio, this is a favourite for our customers by the glass.
The Tradition range is made with the traditional grape varieties of the Luberon and offers generous wines.
The Tradition Blanc is made of 80% Roussanne with 20% Rolle (Vermentino). A well-balanced and crispy wine, fresh and clean with notes of aromatic fruits and white flowers.
The Tradition rouge is made of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. 30% of the blend aged 6 months in 225 litres barrels. French Oak. 1/3 of new barrels. It is a well-structured and balanced wine, supple and round with a deep purple colour. A slightly spiced wine with notes of blackcurrant and red berries
The Tradition rosé is made of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 10% Cinsault and 10% Rolle (Vermentino). It is a lively, fresh and aromatic wine with notes of red berries and citrus fruit.
The Reserve Range
And finally the Réserve range. These cuvées are a result of careful selection of the very best vines to obtain the most elegant expression of the terroir. From this range, one white, one rosé and one red, Les Aubépines, Joséphine and Les Griottes.
Made with a selection of the best Roussanne, Les Aubépines is an elegant and complex white wine with notes of hawthorne and acacia. Aged 6 months on lees in oak barrels.
Cuvee Josephine rosé
The cuvée Joséphine is made with a selection of best juices (Grenache/Syrah/Vermentino) and then aged on lees for some months. The result is a charming, fruity, juicy and elegant rosé. Gorgeous notes of raspberry, red berries and cherries. Sealed with a glass “Vinolok” stopper and also available in magnums! We find Josephine a good wedding wine as the bottle is super attractive!
And Les Griottes
And then our favourite, Les Griottes, a gorgeous wine! From the highest altitude at 450 metres. A blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache and barrel aged for 10 months in French oak.. Les Griottes is an elegant and powerful wine, with a dark purple colour. Slightly spiced and smoked, with rich aromas of berries, dried plums, stewed fruits. Les Griottes is also available in magnums.
We love Château Val Joanis as they are such good value for such amazing wines. Firstly, it is an amazing place to visit, secondly we have a great relationship and friendship with the winery and their Commercial Director Gaël Blanchon, but most of all, we get good continuity throughout the vintages so we are always confident in their quality.
