The Domaine Pierre USSEGLIO is a family business and is one of the most well-regarded producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The excellent terroir, old vines and generations of craftmanship have resulted in wines of the highest quality.

‘Cuvée de Mon Aieul’ is a selection of grapes from vines 75 to 90 years old. A pure and concentrated wine and great elegance.

“One of the top handful of wines in the vintage, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache, from the different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone) that was 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids. Reminding me of the 2007 with its incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provençal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. A wine of incredibly purity, precision, and elegance, yet also with power and opulence, this sensational effort is in need of 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.” 98+ Points, Jeb Dunnuck, November 2021

Vineyard & Vinification Note

The parcels are spread over the entire area of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

The various locations boast four different types of terroir which has great impact on the complexity in the wines. There are lime-rich, cool locations as well as dry, warm sandy soil.

24 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge

Cuvée de Mon Aieul is a selection of grapes from vines 75 to 90 years old. They come from plots on La Crau, les Bédines or les Serres, where the soils are sand and stone, covered in the regions famous galets.

Harvest is done by hand.

The bunches are destemmed, depending on the ripeness of the stalks, and then they are very slightly crushed before macerating in concrete vats for 30 to 40 days. Fermentation temperatures are between 25 ° – 28 °. During this period procedures such as pumping over, délestage or even batonnage take place. These procedures allow a gentle extraction of the aromatic components to ensure good concentration and intense colours.

Aged in concrete tanks for 18 months.

Tasting Note

The “Cuvée de mon Aïeul” is a pure and concentrated wine. The nose is very complex with notes of raspberries, liquorice and spices. It is a powerful wine that retains great elegance. Delicious!

Wine Advocate

All Grenache, all whole cluster, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul combines hints of menthol and steaminess with big blackberry and raspberry fruit. Full-bodied, creamy and lush, it finishes long and velvety, a tour de force of Grenache. Drink Date: 2023 – 203596 Points, Joe Czerwinski, May 2022

Wine Spectator

This has the heady edge of the vintage, with gutsy blackberry, plum and fig compote notes forming the bulk of the wine, while singed juniper, warm stone and tar notes score the finish. Delivers a nice licorice snap at the very end for a finishing kick. Best from 2023 through 2035. 94 Points, James Molesworth, December 2021

Food Pairing

Enjoy with game, a rack of lamb and strong cheeses.
