Montebaco is the brand of the wines grown at Finca Monte Alto, which straddles the border of two municipalities at the western end of the D.O. Ribera del Duero (Valbuena and Pesquera). After the dissolution of church property in 1835, the land was sold off and many estates were turned over to hunting for wealthy landowners. This was the case of the nearby Vega Sicilia and also the land on which Finca Monte Alto sits, which is just 10km from their more famous neighbours. The Esteban family bought the land in 1981 and subsequently sold most of it to fund the planting of vineyards and the construction of the family’s winery. This is a single estate winery, using only the grapes from their own vineyards, located at between 850 and 900m above sea level in a side valley to the Duero, called the Jaramiel. Manuel Esteban grows almost exclusively Tinto Fino, the classic grape of Ribera, as well as a small amount of Merlot.
